When you first start out your internet marketing campaign, you should be focusing on obtaining targeted traffic. It’s a pretty well defined art of getting traffic to your website and if you work on it you can do very well. I’m constantly blown away by what others can do.
In these podcast interviews I've listened to, I've learned that this kind of targeted traffic is called remarketing or retargeting. When someone finds my business through these services, they are cookied. As they visit other websites the banners we use follow them around.
It’s really cool to see how this process of retargeting works. When you concentrate on SEO marketing through the search engines, you can’t get this service unless you have certain pieces of software. You can find these buy doing a search in the search engines for this.
This is something that is important and for you to think about. When you get your traffic from the search engines, technically, they are in charge of your business. They are the ones that are sending you traffic and they can stop anytime that they want to. It’s also works that way with some pay per click advertising. Just as you’re doing very well they will raise your bids.
When these companies ban you they ban you for life. So be careful to follow all the terms of service. Most people don’t read them, but I suggest that you do. There was someone that I knew that spend $85,000 a year on pay-per-click advertising and the next day they banned his account. Stuff like this happens all the time so don’t think it can’t happen to you.
These are some of the reasons why I think it is a good idea to tell others about your website through other sources. You have lots of pay per click advertising, newspaper or TV ads that you can put up. Sending flyers to other people in the mail is a good way to pick up new customers as well. Have you ever thought about picking up the phone and asking someone if they knew of anyone that would be interested in what you have to offer?
There are many things that you can do. Paid media is what I like to call it. You have ad networks, exchanges and aggregators. If you do a search on the search engines, you’ll be able to find them. They have left over advertising on their websites that they sell to the general public. Putting up your banner on these paid media accounts is very good. You have well over one billion pages that you can get your stuff on.
This doesn’t include things like blogs, personal home pages or web 2.0 properties. These are well established businesses that have been around for a while that have extra advertising to sell. You can get lots of traffic from these sources. The over supply of traffic that you can get brings you great targeted traffic you won’t find anywhere else.
